More light
in every cup.

Sun Cafe is an imaginary coffee hall behind 24 metres of south-facing glass. Every drink on the menu belongs to an hour of the day.

The hall changes by the hour. Open it at any time of day

A dark cup of coffee steaming on a bed of roasted beans against a black background
  • The first minute. is for looking. Drink it in the second.

  • The rim. Turned thin, then left a little uneven.

  • The handle. Pressed by hand, with a rest for the thumb.

One long hall built around one long window . We pour the coffee and let the light move the 67 chairs.

A day in four lights

The furniture never moves. The light does the rearranging, from the first low sun to the last lamp.

  1. A steaming mug on a wooden table casting a long morning shadow toward a bright window

    7:15 AM

    First light

Low light runs the length of the window bar. The slow bar pours its first carafe.

  2. A glass mug of black coffee throwing a long amber shadow in bright sun

    12:30 PM

    High noon

The sun climbs over the roof and drops two bright squares through the skylights by the bar.

  3. Golden evening sun flaring through a window past a houseplant

    5:45 PM

    Golden hour

The lounge turns honey-coloured and Golden Hour becomes the most ordered thing on the menu.

  4. A dim room with a slatted timber wall, a long leather banquette and small round tables

    7:45 PM

    Lamplight

Thirteen low lamps take over from the sun. The hall gets quieter, not emptier.

The hall

Twenty-two stools along the south glass. The first seats the morning reaches, and the brightest at noon. 67 seats in all, under one roof with two skylights.

Five drinks, five hours

Every drink on the menu belongs to a time of day. These five cover it from first light to the last lamp.

See all sixteen
A white cup of black coffee on its saucer, half caught in a hard-edged patch of sunlight

Half in the sun, half in the shade.

Light, not glare

One wall of glass, pale walls everywhere else. The hall is designed around the changing day rather than against it.

Room to linger

Move one table over and you are somewhere else entirely. Nobody minds if you follow the sun with your cup.

How the hall was planned

From bean to cup

Five steps behind the north counter, none of them rushed.

A heap of dark roasted coffee beans catching a soft side light
A thin stream of espresso falling from a chrome portafilter
A thin stream of water falling into a paper pour-over filter
A tattooed hand pouring steamed milk into a glass to draw a rosetta
A latte with a leaf pattern seen from above on a speckled dark surface
The bean. Roasted for the hour it will be drunk in.
Late sun lighting a wall of plants above bentwood chairs and small tables

Step into the light.

There is no door to walk through, but there is a seat in the hall that suits your hour.
